7 ways to practice health and wellness at home

Living in these unprecedented times where a global pandemic has taken over our lives, too many of us find ourselves in a weird situation where we are completely cut off from our routines. This has had an overall effect on us physically and mentally. Here are a few things we recommend doing to “kill time more enjoyably” and to also incorporate these (if you haven’t already) into your routine for a happier you.

Practice yoga

In its true essence, yoga is mindfulness, or it is not yoga. The goal is to take the mind to a quiet place and focus on the mind-body connection and awareness. Automatically, doing yoga means meeting with self-compassion by paying attention to bodily sensations and learning to accept reality as it is, without judgement.

Schedule me-time

Spending some quality time alone is a necessity as the relationship you have with yourself is the most important relationship. Whether you decide to take a few minutes and have a chat inwards to see how you’re feeling or you decide to do something you truly enjoy – doesn’t matter, as long as you do it alone.

Meditation is one of the best ways to ensure some me-time in your day. It is when you become super aware of what you are sensing and feeling in the moment, without letting anything interrupt you.

Stay disciplined

Overcoming inner weakness, building perseverance, heightening chances of success with any given goal; these are just some basic reasons to keep yourself tied to the self discipline route. It starts with a healthy morning routine. Check in with yourself. Conquer a healthy morning. Have a great day.

Food mindfulness

This could simply mean taking your time with your meal and eating without any distractions. Or, learning to appreciate your food, noticing the colours, odors, textures, and flavours. Most importantly, not treating food like an enemy or treating it like something to avoid for some fad diet.

Try incorporating gluten free, sugar free and/or vegan meals into your weekly meal plans.

Listen to your body; eat only when you’re hungry and avoid eating for other reasons, such as boredom or anxiety.

Antioxidants

On that note, incorporating more antioxidant foods into your diet will significantly enhance your overall health. Antioxidants are known to protect the cells in your body and prevent chronic diseases. Foods rich in antioxidants include fruits & veggies, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Some common antioxidants are Vitamin C (found in leafy veggies, strawberries, citrus fruits, tomatoes, etc.), Vitamin E (found in organic, sugar-free nut butters, leafy greens, sweet potato, avocado, etc.), Flavinoids (found in berries, onions, celery, dark chocolate, green tea, etc.), Co-enzyme Q10 (found in poultry, fish, nuts, and seeds), Selenium (found in fish, shellfish, grain products, wheat bran, eggs, and oat bran).

Drawing, painting

Have you ever drawn a zentangle? If you have, draw another one. If not, you should try it out. Zentangle art is kind of like therapy that is sure to make you feel more relaxed and focused – “meditative doodling”. Essentially, you draw patterns in repetition made of simple dots, lines, curves, and orbs.

Make a collage, a vision board

What better way to motivate yourself than to make a list of things you would like to do in your life, and then attaching a picture to it for added fun and inspiration. You don’t even need to make a physical vision bord simply start a new folder on your computer or the image gallery on your phone and save pictures there. You can top that off with a page, journal or sketchbook where you write or draw your inspo.

Vision boards could represent aspirations a lifetime, or better yet, they can be made to give a boost to short-term objectives, such as annual or 5- to 10-year goals.

Some examples to add to your vision board are:

  • Words that inspire you
  • Quotes that inspire you
  • Places you want to travel to/see
  • Pictures to represent your dream home
